Cattail Creek Estate Winery

Cattail Creek Estate Winery takes its cues from nature as they produce a wide variety of wines that express a philosophy of winemaking designed to capture the essence of the vineyard. Even within a defined terroir like the Niagara on the Lake growing region, subtle differences in topography, climate, elevation, and harvest date mean the grapes of each individual vineyard will show varying characteristics. Through experience and experimentation, Cattail Creek Estate Winery has identified the best locations for each grape variety within the vineyards and continually adjust the growing methods to suit each variety.

Add to those factors changes in growing conditions from year to year and it becomes apparent why Cattail Creek Winemaker Colin Ferguson seeks to forge an intimate relationship with each individual block of grapes.  The results of this relationship are found in each of Cattail Creek's estate bottled wines. 

At Cattail Creek, rather than manipulating the grapes to create a predetermined product, the approach is to allow the grapes to develop into wines reflective of their upbringing. By limiting the handling of the wines, they develop naturally in the way the grape demands, reflecting the attributes of the season and the terroir. The result is outstanding wines that successfully highlight the purity of the fruit, while responding to the characteristics of each vintage. 

In keeping with the tradition of many small wineries, one must visit Cattail Creek to sample most wines and many are only available for purchase on site or through their website. The winery produces a wide array of notable whites, reds and late harvest wines.  Visitors interested in sampling are always welcome. 

Both the Cattail Creek Estate Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2007 and the Barrel Fermented Vidal Icewine received gold medals at Cuvee and the Select Late Harvest Riesling 2007 got top honours at Intervin. 

Regular public tours are not offered at Cattail Creek. Private tours and tastings however, are available by appointment for groups of ten or more people. Tour types vary from tasting and pairing experiences, to opportunities to explore the entire facility and allow visitors to learn from either the proprietor or the winemaker and sample from a handpicked selection of Cattail Creek Estate wines, including those that are new and unreleased.
