Château des Charmes

Plan Your Getaway

Family owned and operated for ever 30 years, Château des Charmes winery is the culmination of five generations of winemaking expertise. Founder and principal winemaker Paul Bosc came to Canada with his family in the 1960’s. Bosc spent 15 years working in the Niagara wine industry before founding Château des Charmes in 1978.

Drawing from his winemaking lineage, Paul did what no other in Niagara-on-the-Lake had done before, planting Canada’s first commercial vineyard dedicated exclusively to vitis vinifera, the European grape varieties that make the finest wines. The impact on the Niagara-on-the-Lake wine industry can only be described as revolutionary.

Bosc was visionary in his approach and remains dedicated to the advancement of Niagara-on-the-Lake as a world-class producer of fine wine. Throughout his career, Bosc has distinguished himself as an innovator and mentor and his contributions to the industry are internationally recognized. Bosc and his family are recipients of the Order of Ontario, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, Niagara-on-the-Lake Citizens of the Year and the Order of Canada.

As Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries and wines began to gain greater international attention, the Bosc family recognized that the public had an appetite for not only the wines, but for wine knowledge as well. In 1994, Château des Charmes state of the art winery and visitor centre opened to the public.

Leading winemakers make leading wines, and Château des Charmes boasts hundreds of national and international medals. Their award-winning vineyards feature a number of rare and unique varieties of grape including Gamay Noir 'Droit' and Aligoté.  Pioneering research continues today in both their vineyards and cellar.  The Bosc family can also boast of many firsts in the industry: use of wind machines to mitigate winter cold and spring/fall frosts and the first winery in North America to put QR codes on thier labels to provide consumers with more information.

Touring and tasting experiences with an emphasis on the vineyard and sustainable farming practices are plentiful at Château des Charmes and celebrate the Bosc family style of winegrowing. Most notable among the Château des Charmes experiences are those that cater to couples. Wine Country Romance is a private, guided tour of the vineyard, cellars and crush room before a relaxed sampling of four premium VQA wines with  Canadian artisanal cheeses in a stylish lounge. Couples may also a enjoy a gourmet Picnic Made for Two in the Château des Charmes vineyard, followed by an intimate, guided tour of the winery.
