Wines that Over-Deliver on Value #7: Trius, Niagara-on-the-Lake

Trius Winery at Hillebrand

29 November 2011

Linda Garson, Calgary Wine Examiner
November 24, 2011
Craig McDonald, winemaker for Trius Wines, came to Calgary recently and brought us his 2010 vintage to try – the vintage of the decade! Craig has made wines in his native Australia for De Bortoli, Villa Maria in New Zealand, Sokol Blosser in Oregon and now Hillebrand in Niagara, over the last 15 years. He was awarded Ontario Winemaker of the Year in 2008 and was instrumental in creating Canada’s first celebrity wine brand, Mike Weir Wines.
Traditionally 80% of Trius wines are poured on premise, primarily by the glass, and 20% are sold through liquor stores. The first vintage in 1989 was a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which won the best Red Wine Trophy at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London UK, in 1991.
Craig brought us white wines to try that are perfect for entertaining over the holiday season, such as:
Trius Brut $24.95 12.5% ABV
Truis Brut is a delicious sparkling wine made in the Method Classique style from 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pint Noir. It is aged on the lees for up to two and a half years to give a clean and fresh, yet biscuity and tropical fruit flavours of pineapple and banana. Highly awarded, Trius Brut won Wine Access Magazine’s Value Wine Awards for Sparkling Wines in 2011 and a Gold Medal at the All Canadian Wine Championships 2011, as well as 2 gold medals in 2010. Pair with full-flavoured cheeses, fresh fish and chicken dishes, particularly in cream sauces, and other light meats.
Trius Dry Riesling 2010 $14.95 11.6% ABV
A fine example of Niagara Riesling, Trius Dry Riesling has a nose of candied lemons and lemon curd, and is picked earlier in the season to maintain a lower alcohol and citrusy sweetness. It has a light-medium body and tastes fresh and clean with notes of green apple, citrus fruit and pear. This wine would be ideal with spicy dishes, in particular Asian hot dishes, soft cheese such as Brie or Camembert, vinaigrette dressings and dishes with a lemon flavour. It would be perfect with sushi and other fresh fish dishes such as oysters and white fish dishes as well as turkey and chicken dishes.
Trius Chardonnay 2010 $14.95 13.5% ABV
This is a creamy Chardonnay with flavours of white peach, red apple and a hint of spice. On the nose there are aromas of banana and coconut with hints of oak from17% of the wine that has spent six months aging in...
