Honoured by the Queen - Winemaker Paul Bosc Sr. receives Diamond Jubilee Medal

Paul Bosc Sr., founder and owner of Château des Charmes Winery in St. Davids, was among the more than 30 Canadians honoured at the ceremony, which was held in the music room of the Lieutenant-Governor’s Suite at Queen’s Park in Toronto. Alongside other notable Canadians such as Major-General Lewis MacKenzie, Peter Mansbridge, Gordon Lightfoot, Stephen Lewis, and Michele Landsberg, Bosc received one of the inaugural medals established to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne, celebrating the tremendous achievements and contributions Canadians have made to their country.
“I feel very honoured to have received this,” Bosc said on Tuesday afternoon.
Sitting in his winery, Bosc said the award wasn’t a complete surprise. Just 10 years ago, he was honoured with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.
“I wasn’t really expecting it, though,” he said “It tells me my name is still out there, popping around. People are still talking about me.”
The fifth-generation winemaker moved to Canada in 1963, living for a while in Quebec before settling in Niagara. In 1978 he became a founding partner in Château des Charmes, planting Canada’s first commercial vineyard to feature, exclusively, European vitis vinifera grape varieties.
He’s received a fair share of accolades over the years for his work in the industry and his efforts to raise the profile of wine in Canada. Bosc has received an honorary doctorate from Brock University, the inaugural Canadian Vintners Association Award of Distinction and also the Order of Ontario and Order of Canada.
