Niagara winery Trius looks to have its Oscars moment after being invited to a luxury gifting suite during the Academy Awards.
Its wines came to the attention of Celebrity Connected executive producer Gene Shaylis, who visited Niagara-on-the-Lake this past summer and was impressed with the winery so much that the company wanted to bring Trius to Hollywood.
Celebrity Connected holds a pre-Oscar gifting suite that will take place the day before the awards night on Feb. 28.
“The guest list is by invite only, celebrities either nominated for the 2016 award-season (Oscar, SAG, Globe or Emmy) or have a 200,000-plus social media following,” said Tina Truszyk, Ontario VQA brand manager for Andrew Peller Ltd. “Up to 150 celebrities have been invited to attend the gift suite.”
Head winemaker Craig McDonald will be joined by several Trius staff as they head to Los Angeles, where they will share the award-winning Trius Brut and 25th anniversary vintage of Trius Red.
The Brut sparkling wine recently won a gold medal at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine Championships held in London, England. The Trius Red that turns 25 was the first Canadian wine to win best red honours at the International Wine and Spirits competition in 1995 for the 1991 vintage.
“It’s an incredible honour to be invited for the Oscars,” said McDonald.
“I’m bedazzled by it all; it’s pretty amazing. It’s also really cool to show what Canada can do.
“We’re putting our best foot forward (with these wines). I’m excited to showcase our fantastic wines from Niagara.”
The winemaker who is used to being in the midst of celebrities like Wayne Gretzky isn’t starstruck.
“I’m not worried about that.”
But, McDonald admitted he wouldn’t mind pouring a glass of wine for Samuel L. Jackson.
“I think he’s the coolest guy around,” he said.
