Stonechurch Vineyards
The Hunse family, owners and operators of Stonechurch Vineyards, have been farming their land since 1955. Early vegetable crops eventually gave way to vast tracts of tender fruit orchards and vineyards and in 1989 Stonechurch Vineyards emerged from Hunse Farms as a small cottage winery. As with so many of the smaller wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake, there was enough demand for the high quality wine that the focus shifted incrementally, orchards were sacrificed, winery operations expanded, more land was acquired and eventually Stonechurch Vineyards held 76 acres exclusive to grape growing. For a time that was enough, but in recent years further expansion and investment into the winery has been necessary to meet the ever-rising popularity and demand for their wine.
Also new is Winemaker Casey Kulczyk. Newly graduated from Niagara College’s Viticulture program, Casey is one of the future star winemakers in Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country. In fact, beginning his career at 22 years of age, he is quite possibly the youngest winemaker in Canadian winemaking history. Given the bounty of the vineyard, anticipation is high for the wines this “Boy Genius” will create.
The winery tasting bar and boutique offer not only their acclaimed VQA wines for sample and purchase, but the boutique also features a variety of wine-inspired gourmet food products that perfectly compliment Stonechurch Vineyards’ wines. Banquet facilities on-site are available for large parties, weddings and anniversary celebrations and the enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff ensure a memorable experience.
The winery itself is nestled on a quiet country road in the Niagara Lakeshore sub-appellation. Stonechurch is a world apart, where the serenity of nature and picturesque landscapes provide the perfect environment for the enjoyment of wine. Guided wagon tours and quiet treks along the Stonechurch Walking Trail are immersive winery experiences that will restore the spirit for any visitor.
Twenty years of fine wine have kept Stonechurch Vineyards in the spotlight and with the continuing evolution, those loyal to the Stonechurch label have every reason to celebrate what is to come.
