Sustainable Winemaking

Plan Your Getaway

In Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country ‘sustainable’, is not a buzz word.  It is how the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake have been making wine for decades.  Here, sustainability is simply a way of life.  The Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake are committed to continually making and improving the quality of our wines in an environmentally responsible manner.  We are proud to be the home of some of the Ontario wine industry’s pioneers in sustainable viticultural and winemaking practice.

Each winery does their part and here are some of the highlights:

  • Building LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) wineries and winemaking facilities
  • Implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods in the vineyards to reduce and eliminate the need for pesticides, herbicides and insecticides
  • Collecting and reusing rainwater to use in the winery, from winemaking to watering the lawn
  • Reducing irrigation
  • Using lightweight glass for wine bottles
  • Partnering with local growers to create clean energy from grape pomace to power greenhouses and homes in the Niagara Region
  • Using grape pomace, stems and leaves as compost in the vineyards
  • Embracing handpicking
  • Employing ‘Mother Nature’s pruners’ in the vineyards, locally raised lambs, to thin leaves on the vine and create compost
  • Incorporating marketing and winery tourism collateral materials that are made of products that are biodegradable, recycled or FSC certifie
  • Encouraging guests use public transportation, like the GO Train, to get to wine country and biking once they get here
  • Fostering Canada’s leading ‘localvore’ Chefs and working with local food providers for events
